Scavi di Oplontis
The archaeological area of Oplontis is situated at the centre of Torre Annunziata in the province of Naples. The area contains a series of archaeological discoveries related to the outlying area of Oplontis which was buried, together with the more famous sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae, by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The excavations brought to light a villa dating to the first century BC which probably belonged to Poppea, the second wife of the Roman emperor Nero, as well as a significant number of gold and silver coins and numerous pieces of jewellery.
