Parco archeologico di Cuma
Founded in the 8th century BC, Cuma is one of the oldest Greek colonies in Italy. Conquered by the Samnites and subsequently by the Romans, many of the temples were subsequently turned into basilicas, such as the Temple of Jupiter which became the cathedral of the diocese of Cuma. It is worth visiting the following monuments in the park: the Sybil’s Cave (Antro della Sibilla), the place where the Sybil received the faithful and foretold their future; the Roman Crypt (Crypta romana) built to connect the city of Cuma to the port area, later used as catacombs in the early Christian era; the Capitolium, the temple sacred to Jupiter Neptune and Mercury (the Capitoline triad); and lastly the Forum Baths (Terme del Foro); built in the centre of the city, the Baths were elaborately decorated, as can be seen from the discoveries of marble slabs, mosaics and painted plaster.
