Museo Archeologico Nazionale Marcello Gigante
The National Archaeological Museum of Volcei is dedicated to the memory of Marcello Gigante, illustrious citizen of Buccino, refined and sensitive philologist, Hellenist and papyrologist, founder, among other things, of the “Center for the study of Herculaneum papyri”, who always wished warmly the establishment of the Museum itself.
The building that houses it is a fifteenth-century construction considered by many scholars to be the oldest Augustinian monastic foundation in the Salerno area, of which we know already in the fourteenth century.
In 1473 Maestro Natale da Ragusa designed and built the cloister and the part of the convent arranged around it “in honor of God, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Blessed Antonio and Agostino”.
The evocative structure houses the finds on a completely restored surface of about 1600 square meters distributed on the four levels through which the exhibition itinerary winds.
