Anfiteatro Campano
The amphitheatre at Capua is the largest amphitheatre from the Roman period after the Colosseum. It is world famous for being the place from where the gladiator Spartacus led the revolt that held Rome in check before the first triumvirate. The amphitheatre was also the first place to have a training school for gladiators. It was seriously damaged on various occasions over the centuries, eventually losing its function as an arena. After the city was destroyed by the Saracens, it became a fortress. During the Swabian dynasty, it was used as a stone quarry.
